Vita

From 1995 to 2001 he was with Philips Research Laboratories of Royal Philips Electronics, in Hamburg and Aachen as a Principal Scientist. Here, he worked on Computer Aided Surgery (CAS), X-ray and ultrasound image and signal processing as well as novel micromachined ultrasonic transducers. From 2001 to 2004 he was Professor for Medical Engineering at RheinAhrCampus Remagen, University of Applied Science Koblenz where he was involved in teaching and research on ultrasonic imaging. Since 2004 he has been Professor for Electrical Engineering and holds the chair for Medical Engineering at Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany.

His research interests comprise all medical imaging modalities as well as processing of the resulting images. A central topic of his work is ultrasonic imaging. Current research topics are ultrasonic targeted imaging and targeted drug delivery, ultrasonic elastography, acoustic properties of tissue microstructure, and the combination of optical and acoustical imaging.

He is a member of the German Association of Electrical Engineers VDE (Germany), IEEE (USA), German Society of Biomedical Engineering (DGBMT/VDE), and German Society of Ultrasound in Medicine (DEGUM). Prof. Schmitz is speaker of the Ultrasound chapter of DGBMT/VDE. He is a board member of the Ruhr Center of Competence in Medical Engineering (Kompetenzzentrum Medizintechnik Ruhr - KMR).
